The matrix, attachments, and spiritual evolution

Talks of the ‘matrix’ to define the dense 3D realms can at times seem nothing short of ridiculous. From the overstimulating visuals of the movie to the suspicious co-opting of the word by the 'Manosphere', what this sensitive system actually means and what it can look like in our day to day lives can seem obscure.
Bearing in mind there are various definitions of a matrix, the mathematical definition of a matrix is a set of numbers arranged in rows and columns to form a rectangular array or group of numbers (Britannica). One of the core features of matrices (plural of matrix) is that they are inherently predictable in their structure but can be used to model complex, changing systems. The definition of the term is crucial as many glance over it, often drawing parallels between the principles and lessons from the movie and our energetically dense 3D realities. While this is not wrong, understanding the matrix to be predictable in structure and then drawing parallels between the matrix as a mathematical concept to our 3D realities alongside core lessons from the movie provides us with greater insight. It enables us to understand that there may be core principles keeping us energetically tied to certain forms of oppression whether in our intimate spaces or collective experiences.

In my experience, honing these patterns down to energies enables deeper understanding of not just what may be keeping you stuck, but also how that feels like. The feelings, fears, desires, that come with it. This is what most people are unwilling to explore. Beneath the desires and ambitions that drive the collective, some such as the desire to have more, to appear perfect, to have all the women or men, and to be admired for it. Beneath these collective desires that are shaped by media and projections of scarcity are fears; the fear of seeming inadequate, under-accomplished, or unimportant. These fears and desires become energetic hooks that not only drive people but make it difficult for people to release themselves. This is even without considering the influence of the intimate fears and traumas we experience individually.
Here is where the attachments come in. to stay safe within whatever identities we create for ourselves (especially the false ones) we become attached to whatever we believe gives us an advantage even when this may not be entirely true, or even when the attachment brings us suffering. How many women cling onto their looks, male validation, aesthetics because they believe it gives them a leg up? How many men crave and cling onto the validation of their male peers and in turn take on false identities in an attempt to maintain respect or street credibility? These attachments are inextricably tied to fears, desires, and the unknown.
When I was thinking of this blog idea, I quickly remembered my time at university where I read some Buddhist texts as part of a module. At a basic level, Buddhist teachings assert that clinging is the source of suffering (Spirit Rock). The concept of the five aggregates (Khanda) are the aspects of experiences we become attached to. These are form (Rupa), feeling (Vedana), perception (Sanna), mental formations (Sankhara), Consciousness (Vinnana) (Spirit Rock). These aggregates constitute the ways in which we experience the world and when we think about them it enables us to understand why attachment forms.
Please understand that my teachings in this blog is not an attempt to say “we should all become detached from everything” because that is not entirely healthy or possible in this 3D realm. However, we must become aware of when and what we should let go of attachments that do not support our long-term growth. This is especially true for the Priestess or Priest who is confronted with the following ultimatum repeatedly: transform or stay stuck in karmic patterns and loops. For the Priestess, transformation is non-negotiable because of the intensity and sometimes ruthless nature of what you must learn: trying to fit in or live your life like others will be your detriment, holding onto old identities and patterns will keep you stagnant. For you, it’s not just about releasing these patterns so that you can experience freedom, it is also about ensuring that you can safely yield your God-ordained power.
